Does ADHD Make Goal Setting Harder?

A goal involves several separate demands: choosing a direction, deciding what comes first, keeping track of the plan and continuing when progress feels slow.Adults with ADHD can experience difficulties with planning, organisation, procrastination and completing projects (National Institute of Mental Health, n.d.).

These difficulties can make the steps between an intention and a finished task harder to manage. You may know exactly why a goal matters and still struggle to organise the actions it requires.

This course helps you examine those practical challenges and develop a more manageable approach.

You will consider the size of your goals, the steps involved and the support your plans need in everyday life.

Does This Sound Familiar?

You decide that this week will be different. You make a detailed plan, start several changes at once and feel motivated for a few days. Then something interrupts the routine, and finding your way back becomes difficult.

Maybe your goals stay broad: get organised, finish the project, improve your routine. You care about the outcome but cannot quite identify what to do today. You might keep switching to a new idea before the previous one is finished. Or you set a deadline that looks reasonable until you account for work, family and everything else already in your week.

When progress stalls, you may focus on what you have not done and overlook the steps you have already taken.

This course gives you a structured opportunity to explore those patterns and practise a more manageable way forward.

What You Will Learn:

‍

The Adult ADHD Goal Setting course takes you through understanding your goals, developing a practical plan and reviewing your progress. You will explore how ADHD can affect motivation, focus and follow-through. Using the SMART method, you will practise making goals specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-bound.You will learn to break larger goals into manageable actions, identify priorities and consider how those steps fit into your available time. The course also addresses what happens after the initial enthusiasm fades. You will explore obstacles, ways to support motivation and how to adjust your approach when your plan becomes difficult to follow. Tracking progress, recognising achievements and reflecting on your experience are part of the process. Structured workbook activities, templates and tools support you to apply the learning to your own life.

Understand Your Goal-Setting Patterns

Where does progress usually become difficult for you?

You might choose a goal that is too broad, underestimate the steps involved or try to work towards several changes at once. Perhaps beginning feels manageable, but maintaining direction becomes harder as other demands build.

The course helps you look more closely at your own patterns. You will explore the relationship between what you want to achieve, the plan you create and the actions you can realistically take.Understanding where you tend to get stuck gives you a clearer starting point for deciding what needs to change.

Make Your Goals Clearer and More Manageable

“I want to get more organised” describes a direction. A more specific goal helps you decide what to do next and how you will recognise progress.

The course uses the SMART framework to help you clarify what you want to achieve, why it matters, what is realistic and when you will review your progress. You will also practise breaking larger goals into smaller actions, so you can identify a starting point without needing to work out every detail at once.

The aim is to create a goal that gives you useful direction and a next step you can realistically approach.

Plan and Prioritise Without Becoming Overwhelmed

Having several goals can leave you feeling busy without being clear about where your attention needs to go. You may move between projects, focus on whichever task feels most urgent or spend your available time reorganising the plan. The course covers prioritisation and planning to help you organise your goals into a more workable sequence. You will consider what needs attention first, what can wait and how your actions fit into the time available.Your plan can account for existing commitments, preparation and the practical demands involved in making progress.

Smiling woman in brown blazer and jeans leaning on a wooden dining table in a bright kitchen.

Maintain Motivation and Adapt When Plans Change

The early excitement of a goal may feel different from the experience of returning to it after a long day or an interruption.

The course explores staying motivated, overcoming obstacles and adjusting your approach. You will consider what interrupts progress and how to respond when your original plan becomes difficult to follow. A setback can give you information about the size, timing or structure of your goal. You can use that information to simplify a step, reconsider a deadline or change your approach.

You will also explore recognising progress and reflecting on what has helped, so you have something useful to build on.

Practical Tools You Can Apply

The course combines ten chapters with a 72-page workbook containing structured activities, templates and tools. You can work with a goal from your own life as you explore the material. That might be completing a project, developing a routine, organising an area of your home or making progress with your studies. Use the learning to clarify the goal, organise its steps and review your approach as you go. With 180 days of access, you have time to revisit relevant sections while applying the strategies.

What You Can Work Towards

The course provides opportunities to develop clearer goals, more manageable plans and a better understanding of what supports your follow-through. Progress might mean choosing one priority, identifying a first action or making a realistic plan for a project you have been postponing. It might also mean recognising when a goal needs adjusting, returning after an interruption or noticing progress you previously overlooked. Results vary, and the learning takes practice. The aim is to build skills you can continue adapting to your circumstances.

Build a Goal-Setting System That Fits Your Life

Bring the learning together by considering how you will choose, plan and review your goals.

What are you working towards?
What is the next manageable action?
When will you have time for it?
How will you notice when your plan needs adjusting?

Use your answers to guide how you apply the course material. Start with something specific and manageable, then refine your approach as you learn what supports your progress.

A useful plan should account for your energy, commitments and available capacity, including after a busy week or a setback.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Adult ADHD Goal Setting Course
‍
What is ADHD-friendly goal setting? ADHD-friendly goal setting takes account of the practical difficulties that can arise when choosing, planning and working towards a goal. In this course, you will explore clear goals, manageable steps, realistic planning and ways to review your progress.

Why can following through on goals be difficult with ADHD? Following through involves planning, organising, keeping track of tasks and completing actions over time. Adults with ADHD can experience difficulties in these areas (National Institute of Mental Health, n.d.). The course helps you explore the challenges relevant to your goals and practise ways to make your plans more manageable.

Does the course cover procrastination and getting started? Yes. The course covers breaking goals into manageable steps, prioritisation, planning and overcoming obstacles. These learning areas support you to examine what makes beginning or continuing a goal difficult.

Does the course include SMART goal setting? Yes. SMART Goal Setting is a dedicated chapter. You will practise developing goals that are specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-bound.

What does the “Overcoming Obstacles” chapter cover? This chapter explores barriers that can interrupt progress and ways to respond when a plan becomes difficult to follow. You can use the learning to consider obstacles relevant to your own goals.

What does tracking and adjusting involve? It involves checking your progress, identifying what is working and considering what needs to change. You may need to adjust a step, reconsider the timing or make your plan more manageable.

Is staying motivated included? Yes. Staying Motivated is a dedicated chapter. The curriculum also includes Celebrating and Reflecting, helping you recognise progress and consider what supports continued engagement with your goals.

How many chapters are included, and how long is the course? The course includes ten chapters, plus an introduction to the wider CBT for Adult ADHD Program. Can the course tell me whether I have ADHD? No. It is designed around adult ADHD learning needs but cannot assess or diagnose ADHD. If you want to explore a possible diagnosis, speak with an appropriately qualified professional.

What evidence informs this type of approach? Goal-setting research has examined how goals influence motivation and performance, including the importance of feedback and the conditions in which goals are pursued (Locke & Latham, 2002). Separately, ADHD research has investigated clinician-delivered cognitive-behavioural approaches to planning and organisation (Solanto et al., 2010). These studies provide background evidence. Neither is a trial of this self-paced course, and they do not establish its individual outcomes or validate SMART goal setting as a standalone treatment for ADHD.

Does “set goals you actually follow through on” guarantee that I will achieve my goals? No. The phrase describes the course’s focus on practical planning and follow-through. The course provides educational tools and opportunities to practise. Progress depends on your circumstances, the goal involved and how the learning is applied.

Our private services are not appropriate for acute incidents or urgent support.
If you are in crisis, crisis assessment and support services are available 24 hours a day in Ireland. You can contact Samaritans on 116 123, your local GP or out-of-hours GP service, or attend your nearest Accident and Emergency (A&E) department.
In an emergency, dial 112 or 999.
