What Is ADHD Emotional Dysregulation?
Emotional dysregulation refers to difficulty managing the intensity, duration or expression of emotions. For some adults with ADHD, this may involve frustration that escalates very quickly, feeling overwhelmed by relatively small demands, reacting impulsively or finding it difficult to return to baseline after an upsetting experience.Emotional dysregulation is not currently one of the core diagnostic criteria for ADHD, but research indicates that difficulties regulating emotions are common among adults with ADHD and can contribute significantly to everyday impairment (American Psychiatric Association, 2022; Soler-Gutiérrez et al., 2023).Experiencing emotional dysregulation does not, by itself, mean that somebody has ADHD because emotional-regulation difficulties can occur in a range of psychological and medical contexts.
Is Emotional Dysregulation a Symptom of ADHD?
Emotional dysregulation is not currently listed as one of the core diagnostic criteria used to diagnose ADHD (American Psychiatric Association, 2022).Research does, however, consistently identify emotional-regulation difficulties among adults with ADHD (Soler-Gutiérrez et al., 2023). It is therefore more accurate to describe emotional dysregulation as commonly associated with ADHD rather than as a required diagnostic symptom.
Why Can Emotions Feel So Intense With ADHD?
There is unlikely to be one explanation that applies to everyone. For some adults with ADHD, difficulties with attention regulation, impulsivity and executive functioning may interact with emotional processes. Once an emotional response has been triggered, it may also be difficult to shift attention away from the situation or regain a calmer perspective.Stress, sleep, overload, relationships, previous experiences and other psychological factors can also influence emotional intensity. This is why the course looks at emotional regulation from several different angles rather than assuming every strong emotional response has one cause.
Can ADHD Cause Anger Problems?
ADHD does not automatically cause anger problems, but emotional-regulation difficulties, impulsivity and frustration may affect the way some adults experience and respond to anger. It can be more useful to consider how quickly anger escalates, how intense it becomes, what happens when you are angry and how easily you are able to return to baseline. The course addresses anger and frustration as part of the wider process of understanding and managing emotional intensity.
Is This an Anger Management Course?
No. Anger and frustration are included because they can form part of emotional dysregulation, but this is not specifically an anger-management course. The program looks more broadly at emotional awareness, emotional intensity and impulsivity, mindfulness and resilience, lifestyle influences, communication and relationships, and the development of a personalised Emotional Regulation Plan.
Can the Course Help With ADHD Overwhelm?
The course explores emotional overload and helps you recognise the signs that you may be approaching overwhelm. You will examine patterns that can contribute to escalation and practise strategies for recognising and responding to those patterns earlier.Overwhelm can have many possible causes, however, so persistent or severe symptoms may also benefit from individual assessment.
What Exercises Are Included in the Workbook?
The 79-page workbook contains structured activities designed to help you apply the course material to your own life.Exercises include an Emotional Regulation Assessment, a Daily Emotion Journal, Deep Breathing and Relaxation Techniques, a Body Scan, a Healthy Lifestyle Plan, role-playing activities for emotional communication and the development of your own Personalised Emotional Regulation Plan. The workbook is designed to be worked through alongside the video content rather than simply read from beginning to end.
Will This Course Stop Me Feeling Strong Emotions?
No, and that is not the aim.Healthy emotional regulation does not mean suppressing emotion or becoming emotionally flat. The aim is to understand what you are feeling, recognise escalation earlier and increase your ability to choose how you respond when emotions become intense.
Is the Course Therapy?
No. The Adult ADHD Emotional Regulation course is a self-paced educational program and is not psychotherapy, counselling or individual psychological treatment. It does not provide individual assessment, diagnosis or personalised mental health treatment.
Do I Need an ADHD Diagnosis to Take the Course?
The course is designed around difficulties commonly experienced by adults with ADHD, but it is educational rather than diagnostic. It cannot determine whether you have ADHD. If you are unsure whether your difficulties relate to ADHD or another psychological or medical issue, consider discussing your symptoms with an appropriately qualified health professional.
