Does ADHD Make Executive Functioning Harder?

Executive functions are mental processes that help you guide your attention and actions. Core processes include holding information in mind, pausing before responding and adapting your thinking when circumstances change (Diamond, 2013).

Adults with ADHD may experience difficulties with planning, organisation, remembering daily tasks and completing projects (National Institute of Mental Health, n.d.). These difficulties can affect the practical steps involved in carrying out an intention.

You may understand a task perfectly well while finding it difficult to begin, organise the steps or keep track of your progress.

This course helps you explore those patterns and practise ways to make everyday tasks more manageable. The focus is on understanding where you need support and developing practical systems you can use.

Does This Sound Familiar?

You open your laptop to finish something important, notice an unrelated task and realise later that you never started the original job.

You remember a commitment when you are busy doing something else, then forget it when you finally have time. You make a list but struggle to decide what comes first. Or you organise a space beautifully, only to find the system difficult to maintain.

Perhaps an unexpected change throws you off for the rest of the day. You might act quickly in the moment and wish you had taken more time to consider your decision.

You may also feel frustrated with yourself because you can manage some demanding situations well, yet find apparently straightforward activities exhausting.

If these experiences are familiar, this course offers a structured way to understand your difficulties and practise changes that fit your daily life.

What You Will Learn:

‍

The Adult ADHD Executive Function course introduces practical CBT strategies across the areas that help you organise and guide everyday behaviour.

You will explore inhibition, impulse control and decision-making, alongside working memory and the challenge of keeping track of information while completing a task. You will learn about task initiation, procrastination, planning and prioritisation, with an emphasis on making the steps between intention and action clearer.

The course also covers emotional control, flexible thinking, organisation of your environment and self-monitoring. These areas help you consider how you respond when tasks become frustrating, circumstances change or a plan needs adjusting.Through the lessons and workbook, you will practise approaches designed to support starting, focus, organisation and follow-through.

Understand Your Executive Function Patterns

Where does a task tend to become difficult for you?It might be deciding what to do first, holding several instructions in mind or moving from preparation into action.

You may begin easily but lose track partway through, or find it hard to stop one activity and switch to another.

The course introduces these different areas so you can look more closely at your own experience. Instead of treating every unfinished task as the same problem, you can begin identifying the point where additional structure would be useful.

That understanding gives you a clearer basis for choosing what to practise.

Make Starting Tasks More Manageable

You may spend a long time thinking about a task without feeling able to begin. The task might seem too large, the first step may be unclear or you may keep putting it off until the pressure becomes difficult to ignore.

The initiation chapter explores procrastination and getting started. You will consider what makes beginning difficult and learn practical approaches for making a task more approachable.

The aim is to create a clearer route into action, with steps you can test in your own life. That might mean focusing first on a recurring household task, a piece of administration or something you have been postponing at work.

Plan and Prioritise Without Becoming Overwhelmed

A long list can tell you what needs doing while leaving you unsure where to begin. You may feel pulled towards whichever task is most noticeable, switch repeatedly between demands or spend your available time reorganising the plan.

The course covers planning and prioritisation to help you work towards a clearer sequence of actions. You will practise considering what needs attention, what can wait and how to organise the steps involved.

The goal is a plan that is usable within your actual commitments and capacity, with enough clarity to help you take the next step.

Organise Your Environment and Adapt When Plans Change

Your environment can be part of the system you build around everyday tasks. The organisation chapter explores how you arrange your surroundings, while the chapter on shifting focuses on flexible thinking and adapting your approach. You will consider how to make your systems more practical and how to respond when the original plan no longer fits. A useful approach needs to be manageable to return to after an interruption or a difficult day. These learning areas support you to develop structure that can be adjusted as your circumstances change.

Practical Tools You Can Apply

The course combines 12 lessons with a 95-page workbook and practical exercises. You can use the material to reflect on your own executive function challenges and practise the strategies in situations that matter to you. Choose an area such as getting started, organising your environment or following a plan, then notice what becomes easier and what still needs adjusting. You have 180 days of access, allowing time to revisit lessons and work through the material in stages.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Adult ADHD Executive Function Course
‍
What is executive function? Executive function refers to mental processes that help you direct your actions. These include holding information in mind, managing impulses and adapting your thinking. Together, they support activities such as planning and problem-solving (Diamond, 2013).

What can executive function difficulties look like in adults with ADHD? You may recognise difficulty starting or completing tasks, keeping track of instructions, planning, organising or remembering daily responsibilities. The pattern varies between people. These experiences alone do not establish an ADHD diagnosis (National Institute of Mental Health, n.d.).

Does the course cover procrastination and task initiation?Yes. Chapter 5 focuses on initiation, including procrastination and getting started. Planning, prioritisation and organisation are also covered in separate chapters.

Does the course include working memory and impulse control? Yes. The curriculum includes Working Memory and Inhibition. The course description covers impulse control and decision-making within inhibition.

What does the “Shift” chapter cover? This chapter focuses on flexible thinking and adjusting your approach. It addresses the course’s learning area of adapting when circumstances or task demands change.

What is self-monitoring?Self-monitoring involves noticing what you are doing and checking your progress. Within the course, this is an opportunity to consider whether your approach is helping and when an adjustment may be useful.

Is emotional control included?Yes. Emotional Control is Chapter 2 of this course. If emotional regulation is your main learning priority, you can also explore the separate Emotional Regulation course in the collection.

How many lessons are included? The course includes 12 lessons covering the areas outlined above. How long is the course? The course includes 2.25 hours of video content, equivalent to 2 hours and 15 minutes. Allow additional time for the workbook and practical exercises. You can choose your preferred playback speed.

How long do I have access? The individual course includes 180 days of access. The complete Adult ADHD Foundations Program offers 12 months of access to its five core modules.

Is a workbook included? Yes. The course includes a 95-page workbook to use alongside the lessons.

Will I receive a certificate? Yes. A completion certificate is provided. It records course completion and does not confer a professional qualification.

Can I access the course outside Ireland? Yes. The course is available online worldwide and is self-paced.

Is this therapy? No. This is an educational program using CBT-informed approaches. It does not include individual psychological assessment, diagnosis, counselling or therapy.

Can the course tell me whether I have ADHD? No. It is designed around adult ADHD learning needs but cannot assess or diagnose ADHD. If you want to explore a possible diagnosis, speak with an appropriately qualified professional.

What evidence informs this type of approach? Research has investigated clinician-delivered cognitive-behavioural approaches to organisation, planning and time management in adults with ADHD, including a trial of meta-cognitive therapy (Solanto et al., 2010). This research provides background for the broader approach. It is not a trial of this self-paced educational course and does not establish its individual outcomes.

Does “get organised without burnout” mean the course treats burnout? No. The phrase describes the course’s emphasis on developing manageable systems. The course does not diagnose or treat burnout, and it cannot guarantee that you will avoid exhaustion or overwhelm. Persistent difficulties may warrant individual support.

How much does the Executive Function course cost? The individual course costs €297 as a one-time fee. This includes 12 lessons, 2.25 hours of video content, a 95-page workbook, a completion certificate and 180 days of access.

How much does the Adult ADHD Foundations Program cost? The Foundations Program costs €745 for five core modules, equivalent to €149 per module. Valued at €1,635, it offers a saving of €890 and includes 12 months of access. A payment-plan option is available. Visit the Foundations page for current enrolment information.
